We see Lexus ES300 ECUs fairly often. The overhaul approach we take will depend on the year model, as these DENSO-made units for Lexus and Toyota experience entirely different types of failures according to the year range. Early 1990s models are far more likely to need repairs due to the electrolytic capacitors leaking a corrosive fluid onto the board, while a post-2000 ECU will typically suffer from decaying of the metals in the aging SMDs, which will need replaced. The process is basically always going to be a combination of repairs to the copper traces that make up the map of the board and replacement parts addressing whatever damage and/or conditions are present in the ECU.
We often see these coming in for repair of hard shifting issues, knock sensor issues, misfires, no start/no communication, and electrolytic capacitor damage, among many other problems. We replace the parts that are responsible for these symptoms, restoring full function of the ECU, and further replace some of the components that have not failed yet as a preventive measure, to ensure that the ECU lives a long life.
